The ICCC will train physicians in bioinformatic techniques
This is a pioneering initiative in Spain tries to bring the complex genomic tools to clinical medicine.
Barcelona, July 20th, 2009. The Catalan Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (Institut Català de Ciències Cardiovasculars, ICCC) in Barcelona, will train half a hundred of physicians from the main Catalonian hospitals on the knowledge of the most prominent genetic techniques in bioinformatics that are used primarily in the field of biomedical research and can provide significant improvements for patients.
The study of these procedures by doctors and pharmacists can help them to understand and interpret scientific literature, draw conclusions, assess their degree of applicability in routine clinical practice and to get up to date with the new genetic advances that take place in various medical specialties. These are some of the main objectives of the 'Genomics applied to clinical medicine' that will take place in mid-October at the ICCC premises.
In the development of this course will participate, in addition to the ICCC, the Center for Biomedical Research on Net (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red) - Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) under the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and the National Institute of Bioinformatics (INB).
This workshop on genomics is a pioneering initiative in Spain and tries to approach the health professionals working in hospital and health centres, the complex techniques used by researchers. Until now, this type of course has been took place among the researchers but had not been pushed to the clinical area.
This type of technology had being developed in recent years in order to help to solve a variety of clinical problems by identifying genetic factors associated with the risk of disease, its diagnosis, prognosis and patient variability in response to treatment.
